Last Wednesday, it's was Oy Vey LA, post-valentine's show from Team Kosha Dillz. There were many hip-hop acts, a couple I saw who I have nothing good to say, so I won't say anything at all. However last Wednesday at The Viper Room, there were a few artists that were real good and I have written about below. When I got there, Kosha Dillz was on stage freestyling and basically doing some MC work for the show. He then introduced the crowd to Azad Right, a rapper I had seen perform a couple times before and admired, although I'm still hoping Azad can translate his success with the sampled hip-hop he does with original music. His set was real good, got the crowd involved, displayed solid spoken word skills at times. However I'm most impressed with Azad Right's lyrics which have so much meaning and are his biggest strength. What he lacks in not being a stereotypical rapper, he makes up with intellectual, witty lyrics and a solid stage presence to hold the crowd over until the headliner arrives. My favorite is "I'll Be Around" music video below (DOWNLOAD here). Next came Kosha Dillz, my third time seeing him and this time my favorite! He really got the crowd involved, even yanking me closer to the stage in the beginning of his set. His freestyles are award-winning, his stage presence is engaging and overall he's a lot of fun to watch on stage. It also ain't bad that he's not only a great rapper but a great person in general, hooking me up with a shirt and stickers. Here's my favorite Kosha performed, "Doo Doo". Lastly came Keith Masters an up-and-coming electronic hip-hop artist from Chicago. Although his set was the 2nd to last and there weren't more than 20 people in the Viper Room when he came on, he still brought tons of energy. Keith's got potential but he just needs to find something valuable to add to his performance (special effects, more band members, freestyle) to take it to the next level. Here's his latest song, "Game Day II: Believe".
